Derespina Knives Model 10 Production Karambit

This is the production version of the infamous Derespina Model 10 Karambit. The Model 10 was designed to be the tactical fixed blade that is the perfect choice for EDC. Everyone raves about the ergonomics of the Model 10 and the carry-ability of this compact karambit. The D2 tool steel blade measures 2.75 in. tip to handle and is 0.185 in. thick. The blade is double ground, just like the custom, with functional jimping on the thumb ramp and a brushed satin finish. The angle in which the blade style sits in relation to the handle creates maximum cutting and slashing power as well as penetration. Tip to tip, this knife measures 6.5 in. overall with a one-inch diameter pinky ring. This is a well-built karambit with superior ergonomics from one of the best and it comes with a friction fit Kydex sheath with adjustable belt clip attached. It is one of the premier tactical tools on the market and it makes us happy to see it in production form with the exact same materials as the custom but at an excellent price point.

Killer Knife of the Week: Emerson Super Karambit

Emerson made Karambit knives have long been proclaimed by those in the know as the best of the best so it should be no surprise that this weeks Killer knife is the Emerson Super Karambit. Besides Emerson's impeccable craftsmanship the main feature that sets the Super Karambit apart from the competition is it's patented wave opening feature which, "when the situation demands a knife (and fast)", nothing comes close to the lightning fast opening of a waved Emerson. The Emerson Karambit is designed for self-defense and the blade comes incredibly sharp and deadly right out of the box. Get yours while you still can at OsoGrandeKnives.com.

Sharpening Karambit & Hawkbill Blades (Part 1)

When it comes to sharpening a Karambit knife or hawkbill style blade make sure you use the right sharpener and technique to put a really scary sharp edge on your hawkbill blade.

Because of the curved blade shape on most Karambit knives, I have found that flat benchstone sharpeners and most Arkansas flat stones just do not get the job done.

The best sharpener to sharpen your Kerambit knife is one that has round or triangular shaped rods. Honing Steels, butcher steels and round ceramic sharpening rods work well. Some of my favorites are the Lansky 4 rod diamond ceramic sharpener, the Lansky turn box crock stick sharpener and the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker.

With the proper sharpening technique and right sharpener you'll have the edge of your karambit razor sharp!

Fox Derespina Karambit FX-590 Knife Review

The NEW 2013 Fox FX 590 Chiroptera Derespina Karambit from Fox Knives was designed by Rick Derespina of New York City. The 590 model is smaller than that Fox 479 Karambit but it still fits great in the hand... I have large hands not extra large but it fits really nice. Both in the forward and the the reverse grip I get a full four finger grip. I like finger hole on the FX-590 better than the one on the FX-479 model... it's got rounded edges all the way around so there's no sharp edges on it whatsoever.
The N690CO stainless steel blade has a black Teflon coating. The blade is a Talon Hawkbill style with a PlainEdge. I like to refer to it as a Scorpion's tail blade because it looks like the stinger on a scorpion. It's a wicked blade with double scallops and forward Jimping on the thumb ramp to give you a great purchase.
Opening is via dual ambidextrous thumb studs and lockup is via a stainless steel liner lock mechanism. The 420J2 stainless steel pocket clip is another improvement over the previous 479 Karambit model... this one comes forward mounted on the butt end for tip-up carry on the right hand side and it's quad mountable for tip up, tip down, right hand or left hand carry which is a nice improvement. The aggressively textured G10 scales give a great grip and it's light 3 ounce weight makes it comfortable to carry 24-7.
The overall length measures in its 6.1 inches with a blade length of 2.55 inches which should be legal in virtually any municipality within the United States. The blade thickness is .112" and closed at measures in at 5 inches so it 's nice compact and it's very close to the size of the Emerson Combat Karambit.
Stay tuned for more knife reviews.

Quartermaster QTR-5 Hawkbill Karambit

This is the pre-production run of the NEW 2013 Quartermaster Knives QTR-5 Theodore "TC" Calvin Hawkbill which is the second karambit design in the QTRM5TR line.  Each piece of this 300 limited edition run is individually serial numbered (ie) "37/100".
It's a little smaller than the QTR-2 B.A. Baracas Karambit and it's edges have been radiused for a more comfy fit in the pocket for EDC carry.  Note the nice stonewash finish on both the blade and the handle.  The super stout blade on this little beast is a full 3/8" thick making it the toughest blade on a karambit that we've seen.
The blade grind is excellent culminating in a needle sharp tip and as tough as karambits are to sharpen this one came with a hair shaving sharp blade right out of box.  The blade steel is Carpenter CTS BD4P.  BD4P alloy is a high-performance blade steel offering a fine, uniform carbide structure yielding excellent edge retention and grinding/polishing characteristics.
There's absolutely zero side-to-side blade wiggle yet thanks to the ORB® Pivot System and Tri-Spoke® Pivot Assembly the blade opening/closing is incredibly smooth and easy.
The hawkbill blade has a thumb slot which further differentiates it from the QTR-2.  Aggressive traction grooves are nicely placed on the thumb ramp, rear handle grip and on the butt end.  Lockup is via a super heavy-duty framelock.  Torx head screws are used throughout.  Another nice feature is the dual mountable pocket clip which makes for completely ambidextrous carry.
Lockup is via a super sturdy frame-lock mechanism which smoothly and securely locks the blade into place with the sound of a mini bank vault reminiscent of the operation found on Chris Reeves knives.
Also included is a nice padded zipper case to stow it in when not in use.  Overall the QTR-5 is a magnificent example of the newest and best that the cutlery world is currently offering.

New 2013 Emerson Super Karambit

Today I got the chance to handle the new for 2013 Emerson Super Karambit.
Shown above is the Black Emerson Super Karambit.  The handles appear to be unchanged but whats immediately noticeable is the new grind on the tip of the blade which significantly increases the tip strength.
Shown here in the closed position you can see the blade nests nicely in the handle.  The "Emerson Wave" feature snags the corner of your pocket on withdrawal and automatically opens the blade.  These ready-for-action self-defense knives are the fastest opening knives out-of-the-pocket in the world!
The knife is very visible in the pocket because of the highride clip but it's lightning fast into action!  There's really is no way around the clip placement for a karambit, so if you want discrete concealed carry consider clipping it inside the waistband and cover it with an un-tucked shirt.
Other than the new blade grind this highly sought after karambit retains all the proven features of its predecessor.  Read more...

We only have a few of these so, if you want one, place your order soon!

Quartermaster Knives B.A. Baracas QTR-2 Karambit Knife

QTRM5TR's first karambit design! Angular and industrial in appearance. An enlarged finger hole accommodates the most swollen knuckles or gloved hands. We're sure that this is the loudest statement from the karambit genre of the knife industry in years and we're excited to show it.

This knife is being produced of the same powder-metallurgy 154 ultra-premium steel that
QTRM5TR's other three knives are cut from. You'll notice the lack of small parts and the simplicity of the design. No spine-spacer means lighter weight and easier cleaning. A G-10 finger-hole spacer means smoother spins and better transitions. A jimped thumb-ramp and bi-level blade spine will soon become an industry standard once enthusiasts get their hands on this knife. Check them out at OsoGrandeKnives.com.
